Our country guest house was born from the transformation of the antique country complex of San Cristoforo and still retains the typical charm of rural establishments in this angle of Umbria on the border with Tuscany in the hills surrounding Lake Trasimeno.Pian di Marte Country House is the ideal base for your central Italian itinerary. Halfway between Assisi and Siena close to Perugia and Cortona we are near the village of Passignano (one of the prettiest towns in the territory) yet situated in the absolute tranquility of the Umbrian countryside surrounded by fields and forests.In the 1500's San Cristoforo was the parish church for the Pian di Marte valley. On this same site at the beginning of the 17th century a new church (now deconsecrated) was built along with the rectory. Over the years the other buildings that make up the complex were added: the country house the drying shed for tobacco and other farm buildings. The country house and the tobacco building have been transformed into guest housing with the classic farmhouse external staircase giving access to the two upper floors where there are 10 rooms each with a private bathroom. The animal stalls and storage from the original ground floor barn are now a large common living room with an country fireplace that consists of 3 century old stonework a small anteroom and a dining room. Several of the additional farm buildings have been modernized to create individual guest rooms each with independent entries and two of them are equipped to accommodate handicapped guests. All the annex rooms have direct and independent outside access so we can easily welcome guests with animals.Your stay at our guest house includes breakfast and restaurant service can be arranged for dinner (the classic half pension). For dinners visitors have the option of our standard menu or special local dishes (lake fish or eels from Lake Trasimeno real Fiorentina -Florentine- beefsteak cooked on an open flame and local Pian di Marte wild boar when in season!). For groups a full pension menu can be arranged.Our facility is family owned and operated and we all live right here in the old rectory so we can be fully available to meet all your needs during your stay. Welcome to Pian di Marte Country House!La casa colonicaThe Pian di Marte Country House is equipped with 10 guest rooms each with a private bathroom. These rooms are located in the main building which consists of the original country house and the old tobacco drying bard.The rooms are situated on the second and third floors and access is by using the characteristic country house external stairway that connects the ground floor to the original living quarters. The door to the guest room area opens into a small living room. All the rooms can be set up with either a double bed or two single beds and two of the rooms have an additional single bed. The individual bathrooms have glass shower cabinets modern toilets and sinks and come with courtesy soap and shampoo.The warmth and welcoming sensation come in great part form the materials used in the complete reconstruction of this building. This includes the handmade terracotta floor and ceiling tiles the antique chestnut wood moldings and the visible roof beams. Original pieces of the first house appear here and there such as the niches transformed into room closets the original window frames set into the internal walls and the many recuperated roof beams.The use of chestnut wood local stone and handmade terracotta tiles combine well with simple country style furniture and the handcrafted solid wood doors of the closets hung with long country style handmade hinges. All has been designed and built specifically for Pian di Marte Country House with much of the furniture coming from workshops in Guatemala even the simple Franciscan style benches designed by us to reflect the pews in the old church.Along with the 10 guest rooms there are 4 lodgings with independent entrances three of which are located in the redesigned farm building next door and one of which is on the ground floor in a quiet external corner of the main building in the shadow of the church bell tower. These four lodgings guarantee maximum privacy and autonomy and permit you to even bring along your small pets without any extra cost. La Pergola (the arbor suite) is a suite composed of a private bathroom with a crystal shower stall a bedroom with a queen-sized bed with a romantic tent roof and a large living room with a sofa bed and table and chairs. A large glass door opens up to a private external space just for this suite where you can relax on sunny days under the shade of the pergola from which this suite takes it name.La Piccola (the little one) is the suite incorporated in the main building on the ground floor with its own private entrance around the back of the building. This makes it the coolest room in the heat of the summer and it too has an external table and chairs with an umbrella. In the winter the room is warm and cozy. It consists of a small living room with an iron dormeuse that serves as a couch and a large bedroom with a double bed that can also be converted into two single beds with space for a third single bed. This room is completely handicap accessible with a bathroom equipped especially for special guests. La Casetta (the little house) is in a structure originally used as an animal barn. Now it is a large room with a double bed and a sofa bed that opens up into a double bed as well for use by families. This room is also completely accessible to handicapped visitors with a specially equipped bathroom. The room has its own external garden space with an umbrella table and chairs. La Spiovente (the sloped ceiling suite) suite has a double bedroom that also comes with a small sitting room with a table and chairs. The name of the room comes from the sloping roof that has visible roof beams small windows modeled on the ones in the old storage room vintage decorations and a curious curving wall that gives the room its own charm and warmth. The private bathroom has a crystal-doored shower cabinet and the private entrance to this suite is directly across from the main door to the large living area on the ground floor of the main building.
